White Zinfandel comes from the grape of the same name, which is also used to produce a spicy and bold red wine. It is not the variety of the grape, but the method that is used during the processing. In 2006, White Zinfandel outsold Red Zinfandel by six to one.

A true California native, the El Pinal Winery in Lodi California made it into a rose in 1869. Almost 100 years later the Sutter Home Winery began to produce quality red Zinfandel in Napa Valley. In order to increase the concentration of their wines, they would bleed a portion of the grape juice before they fermented it as this increased the compounds. This is called the saignée technique. Once the juice was separated, it was fermented into an almost white dry wine that Sutter Home labeled, “White Zinfandel.”

The White Zinfandel that is produced today was discovered by accident when in 1975 Sutter Home had a problem with the yeast drying out before it consumed the sugar, which is referred to as Stuck Fermentation. The juice was set aside, and it wasn’t until a winemaker tasted it weeks later that the accident became a huge hit with the winery. Today Sutter home ships over four million cases of White Zinfandel every year. White Zinfandel is made by peeling the red skin off the red zinfandel grapes, which results in a light colored wine that does not have the rich flavors found in red wine.

Moscato, pronounced Mo-Ska-Toh, means Muscat in Italian, and is a grape that is planted all over Italy. A yellow straw color, with an occasional tinge of gold, it features amazing honeysuckle, orange blossom, ginger, and almonds with a very expressive fruit that is dominated by citrus tones, ripe peaches, and green grapes. Once you taste Moscato, you can expect sugar levels that range from sweet to semi-sweet along with forward fruit flavors of apple, pear, lime, and orange. The more inexpensive Moscato wines tend to exhibit very sweet fruity flavors, while the higher quality Moscato spotlights stone fruits like peaches and apricots.

Typically known as a dessert wine, it can also be enjoyed as an afternoon thirst quencher, an aperitif, or a delicious accompaniment to Sunday Brunch. Known as a frizzante, Moscato is not quite as bubbly as a sparkling wine like Asti Spumante, but is still very popular for its fresh and sweet fruit forward flavor.

This delicious white wine is meant to be consumed young and well chilled while it is still vibrant and fresh.
